District Attorney Daniella Shorter Levy announces the conviction of CARIVONTAE NIX for Manslaughter and Armed Robbery.
On June 23, 2025, Carivontae Nix appeared before the Honorable Judge Tomika H. Irving in Copiah County Circuit Court and plead guilty. Judge Irving sentenced Defendant Nix to Twenty (20) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) in Count I for Manslaughter and Fifteen (15) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) for Armed Robbery. Upon release from these charges Defendant Nix will serve Five (5) years of supervised probation. Defendant Nix is also required to pay court costs in the amount of Four Hundred and Twenty-Seven Dollars and Fifty Cents ($427.50) and a bond fee as ordered by the Court.
On July 30, 2023, the family of 50-year-old Michael Templeton of Hazlehurst, MS reported him missing. Mr. Templeton’s body was found on August 12, 2023, by hunters, in rural Jefferson County. With the joint efforts of Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, Carivontae Nix was found and questioned. While being questioned Nix admitted to his involvement in the death of Michael Templeton. The death of Michael Templeton was a senseless act of brutality and greed.
